Overview

Markha Valley Trek – A Classic Ladakh Adventure
The Markha Valley Trek is one of the most popular and scenic treks in Ladakh, taking you through remote villages, high mountain passes, lush valleys, and ancient monasteries. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Zanskar and Ladakh ranges, this 7-day trek offers a perfect mix of natural beauty and cultural experience.

Trek Grade: Moderate to Challenging
While the trail doesn’t require technical climbing skills, the high altitudes (up to 5,200 m at Kongmaru La) and long walking hours make it physically demanding. Good fitness and prior trekking experience are recommended.

Who Should Do This Trek:
This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers who are reasonably fit and looking to explore the raw beauty of Ladakh on foot. It’s perfect for those who’ve done moderate treks before and are ready to take on a high-altitude Himalayan trail with unforgettable landscapes and local interactions.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Leh (Altitude: 3,500 m / 11,500 ft)

Your adventure begins with your arrival in Leh, the capital of Ladakh. At over 11,000 feet, it’s important to give your body time to adjust to the thin air. Take it easy today — get plenty of rest, hydrate well, and soak in the peaceful vibe of this high-altitude town surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

Tip: If you’re craving more adventure beyond Markha Valley, consider the Twin Peaks Expedition — summiting either Kang Yatse II or Dzo Jongo Peak, both offering a more challenging experience.

Day 2: Acclimatization & Light Sightseeing in Leh

Today is all about getting used to the altitude. To help your body adapt, take a slow-paced sightseeing tour around Leh. Visit some of the region’s most beautiful monasteries like Shey Palace, Thiksey Monastery with its towering Maitreya Buddha statue, and the peaceful Hemis Monastery tucked away in the mountains.

You can also go for a short downhill cycling tour — just enough to get your blood flowing without putting too much strain on your body.

Day 3: Explore More Around Leh – Give Yourself Extra Time to Acclimatize

This extra day in Leh isn’t just for sightseeing — it’s a vital part of your trek preparation. Spending an additional day at this altitude allows your body to adjust better to the thin mountain air, which helps reduce the chances of altitude sickness once you begin trekking.

Take it slow and enjoy the laid-back pace of life in Leh. You can revisit any monasteries you may have missed, stroll through the charming old town, or simply relax at a café with a view of the mountains. If you’re feeling good, consider visiting Leh Palace or the Shanti Stupa for some light walking and incredible sunset views over the city.

It’s a day for rest, gentle movement, and soaking in the culture and calmness of Ladakh before heading into the wild Markha Valley tomorrow.

Day 4: Drive from Leh to Skiu and Trek to Sara

After breakfast, you’ll drive through the dramatic landscapes of Ladakh to reach Skiu village (3,400 m), which lies at the confluence of the Markha and Zanskar rivers. From here, the trek begins.

The trail to Sara village (3,600 m) is about 11 km and takes 5 to 6 hours to complete. It’s a gradual ascent through lush greenery, barley fields, and small hamlets, giving you a gentle introduction to life in the mountains.

Day 5: Trek from Sara to Markha (3,700 m)

Today’s walk is a beautiful 10 km journey through the Markha Valley, taking around 5 to 6 hours. You’ll cross wooden bridges, pass traditional Ladakhi homes, and perhaps spot a few locals tending to their fields.

The village of Markha is one of the largest settlements in the valley, and you'll likely stay in a local homestay here — a great way to experience Ladakhi hospitality firsthand.

Day 6: Trek from Markha to Hankar (4,100 m)

As you climb higher into the valley, the scenery begins to change. The lush greenery gives way to rugged terrain and dramatic rock formations. This 13 km trek can take up to 8 hours, so it’s a long day — but the views and peaceful surroundings are well worth the effort.

Hankar is a small settlement surrounded by jagged peaks and is a great place to spot marmots and blue sheep if you’re lucky!

Day 7: Trek from Hankar to Nimaling (4,800 m)

You’ll be trekking to one of the highest and most scenic campsites in Ladakh today. The 12 km trail climbs steadily to Nimaling, a beautiful high-altitude meadow with wide open views and grazing yaks.

At 15,800 feet, this is a serious altitude gain — so make sure you take it slow, drink water, and listen to your body. The towering Kang Yatse peak looms in the background, making it a photographer’s dream.

Day 8: Cross Kongmaru La (5,200 m) and Drive Back to Leh

Your final trekking day begins early as you make your way up to Kongmaru La Pass, the highest point of the trek at 5,200 meters. The climb is challenging but offers jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Ladakh and Zanskar ranges.

After soaking in the view, you’ll descend steeply to Chokdo (3,900 m), where your vehicle will be waiting. From there, drive back to Leh (around 3 hours) for a well-deserved hot shower and some rest.

Day 9: Airport Transfer – Goodbye, Ladakh

After breakfast, we’ll drop you off at Leh Airport for your flight home. As you leave the mountains behind, carry with you the memories of snow peaks, starry skies, and the warmth of Ladakhi hospitality.

Important Notes:

  • Always keep a buffer day in your travel plan, in case of bad weather or to explore more of Leh.
  • Carry both original and photocopies of your ID proof.
  • Distances, altitudes, and trekking durations are approximate — they may vary depending on pace and weather.
  • If arriving by air, try to come a day early to acclimatize better.
