Himalayan Shepherd is a locally owned and operated travel company based in Leh, Ladakh — not a booking agency working off a spreadsheet from somewhere else in the country. Since 2010, we've been putting together trips for travellers from India and abroad who want to see Ladakh properly, not just tick it off a list.

For our team, this isn't "a destination we sell." It's home. The monasteries, mountain passes, and villages we send you to are places we grew up in and around. That's really the difference between an itinerary built from research and one built from experience — and it's why our trips tend to go beyond the standard sightseeing loop, into the Ladakh most visitors never actually get to see.

Whatever you're planning — a family holiday, a honeymoon, a motorcycle expedition, a trek, a photography trip, or a slower, more comfortable escape — our on-ground team builds it around you, not a template.

Our Story

Himalayan Shepherd was started in 2010 by Stanzin Dorjey, who was born and raised in Nubra Valley. Growing up there gave him a firsthand understanding of Ladakh's landscape, culture, and people that no training program can really teach.

Before starting the company, he spent years working in the travel industry and kept noticing the same problem: visitors were being handed fixed, cookie-cutter itineraries and treated more like transactions than guests. He started Himalayan Shepherd to do it differently — honest pricing, real local knowledge, and service that treats people like guests in someone's home region, because that's exactly what it is.

What began as a small local outfit has grown into one of Ladakh's established destination management companies. But the core of it hasn't changed — we still run this the way Stanzin started it, with the kind of hospitality Ladakhis are genuinely known for.

What Makes Us Different

Plenty of companies sell Ladakh tours. Very few are actually from Ladakh — and that gap shows up in the details.

We live here, so we plan around reality, not guesswork. Road closures, altitude, seasonal weather, local festivals, which viewpoint is worth the stop and which isn't — this is working knowledge for us, not something pulled off a website.

We run our own fleet. Rather than relying entirely on third-party vehicles like many operators do, we operate our own Toyota Innovas, Innova Crystas, Tempo Travellers, and SUVs — which means we control maintenance, cleanliness, and reliability directly, instead of hoping a rented vehicle shows up in good shape.

Safety isn't an afterthought. High-altitude travel needs real planning. We build in proper acclimatisation, use experienced local drivers, and can arrange oxygen cylinders for high-altitude routes like Hanle, Umling La, and Tso Moriri when needed.

Stays are handpicked, not just listed. Alongside our own managed properties, we work with a vetted network of hotels, camps, and homestays across Ladakh that we'd actually put our own guests in.

Pricing is upfront. Quotes spell out what's included and what isn't, so there are no surprises halfway through your trip.

And once your trip starts, we don't disappear after handing over the keys or the hotel voucher — from arrival in Leh to departure, someone from our team is a phone call away.

Responsible Tourism

Ladakh is stunning, but it's also environmentally fragile, and that's not something we take lightly. We work with local drivers, guides, homestays, and small businesses so that tourism money actually stays in the community it's coming from — not routed through outside operators.

We also ask our guests to travel a little more consciously while they're here: cut down on plastic, respect local customs and monasteries, and support local businesses over imported convenience. It's a small ask that makes a real difference to a region this fragile.
