Best Time to Visit for Snow Leopard Sighting

  • Winter (January – March): The best season for snow leopard tracking in Ladakh, when these big cats descend into valleys following prey like blue sheep (bharal) and ibex.

  • Spring (March – April): Still a good time, with relatively milder weather and opportunities for wildlife photography in Ladakh.

  • Altitude: Tracking takes place at 3,500–4,500 m; acclimatization in Leh is mandatory.

Itinerary

Suggested Itinerary (10 Nights / 11 Days)

Day 01–02: Arrival in Leh & Acclimatization

  • Land in Leh (3,500 m). Spend two days acclimatizing with light sightseeing – Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, Hemis & Thiksey Monasteries.

Day 03–08: Snow Leopard Tracking (Hemis / Rumbak / Ulley)

  • Drive to Hemis National Park or Ulley Valley.

  • Daily guided treks with expert local trackers and wildlife guides.

  • Opportunities to see snow leopards, Himalayan ibex, Tibetan wolves, red fox, blue sheep, golden eagles, and lammergeiers.

Day 09–10: Return to Leh & Cultural Exploration

  • Drive back to Leh, rest, and explore monasteries and markets.

  • Buffer day for flexibility due to weather or extended tracking.

Day 11: Departure from Leh

 

Important Notes for Wildlife Travelers

  • Altitude readiness: Spend at least 2 nights in Leh before the expedition.

  • Weather: Expect extreme winter (-10°C to -25°C). Proper winter clothing is essential.

  • Photography: A telephoto lens (400mm+) is recommended for snow leopard photography tours in Ladakh.

  • Sightings: While not guaranteed, Hemis & Ulley are among the best snow leopard spotting locations worldwide.
